After high school, Shaw then played college basketball, spending his first three years from 1983 to 1985 with Saint Mary’s College of California, before transferring to UC Santa Barbara until he graduated in 1988 with a degree in business economics. Before leaving college he bagged the Pacific Coast Athletic Association player of the year award for leading his team to the NCAA tournament.

With his outstanding performance in high school and college, Shaw was then joined the NBA right after graduation, becoming the 24th overall pick in the 1988 Draft by his new team the Boston Celtics, the start of his career in the professional world of basketball and also the start of his net worth.

After playing for a year with the Boston Celtics, he then transferred to various other teams throughout his career in the NBA. After playing in Italy for one year, from 1990 to 1992 he went back and played again for the Celtics. After that, he transferred to the Miami Heat where he played until 1994. From 1994 to 1997 he played for the Orlando Magic, and then for the Golden State Warriors from 1997 to 1998, after which he spent a year each playing for the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers. Despite transferring numerous times throughout his career, his continuous playing still helped raise his net worth, and further his career.

Out of the many teams that he played with, Shaw received most recognition playing for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1999 to 2003. He helped the team win three championships in three straight years from 2000 to 2002.

After retiring from playing professional basketball, Shaw didn’t look far for his new calling. In 2005 he worked with his last team, the Los Angeles Lakers once again, but this time as their assistant coach until 2011, and then transferred to the Indiana Pacers also working as an assistant coach until 2013. In June of the same year he was hired to be the new head coach of the Denver Nuggets, where he served until 2015. In 2016 he returned to the Los Angeles Lakers as its associate head coach, working alongside Luke Walton as the head coach. His new career also helped increase his wealth through these years.
